The Dell-Intel Youth Concert

Venue: Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza
Date: 30 June 2012
Time: 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm

The Dell-Intel Youth Concert

Happening from 7pm to 9pm, the Dell-Intel Youth Concert is set to get youths gyrating to the music of YouTube sensation Jayesslee, local veteran singing duo Jack and Rai, and up-and-coming local YouTube star Clarence Liew.

There are 100 tickets to Jayesslee’s Meet & Greet session up for grabs! Additionally, there are 300 priority standing tickets to be won in this free-for-all concert! Draws will be held on 26 and 27 June 2012 respectively and winners will be notified through email. So, if you’ve made your pledge, keep your fingers crossed! If you’ve not done so, what are you waiting for?

Jayesslee

This Australian duo comprising twins Janice and Sonia opened a YouTube channel back in 2008 and hasn’t looked back since. In 2010, they played their debut concert in LA and has since performed in Singapore, Washington DC, Vancouver and Malaysia. They’ve also made various television appearances throughout Asia.

Jack and Rai

Former band members of East India Company (the resident band of Wala Walas), Jack and Rai compose their own music and recently released an album titled “In Stores Now”. The dynamic duo not only keeps their audience entertained with their music, but also with their jokes.

Clarence Liew

Only 19, Clarence has quite a following on his YouTube channel – an achievement for someone who has neither been trained musically nor vocally. His folk-like vocals bring a soulful quality to his covers of popular and classic hits.

Luminance! 2012 lights up Orchard Road - June 23 to 1 July

No dream is too big to achieve if you believe in it.

‘Dreams and Aspirations’ is the theme at Luminance! 2012 – Singapore’s first light art festival for youths.

The festival will be commemorated yearly to develop aspiring artists and encourage their creativity. This visionary programme also works as a platform for local artists to express their social views through the medium of light art.

In partnership with *SCAPE and the National Youth Council (NYC), Luminance! takes place at *SCAPE this year and is also a pre-event jump start for SHINE Youth Festival 2012.

For 9 days, beginning 23 June, *SCAPE visitors can expect a rousing display of 27 brightly lighted artworks all around the youth park.

This year, participating artists include renowned sculptors Sun Yu-Li and Tan Sock Fong, 40 fresh local youth artists, two underprivileged communities and three experienced youth artists from a well-known light art festival, Fete Des Lumiere in France.

One of Luminance!’s directors, Allan Lim said he is “elated to receive so many submissions for a first year festival, and even more proud to see young adults holding such strong convictions about their dreams and aspirations.”

Many of the environmentally friendly artworks featured as part of Luminance! are made out of recycled materials.

For instance, the beautiful orchid installation made up of used milk cartons, and the a larger than life ‘Tron Cycle’ transformed from unwanted cardboard boxes are just some of the innovative pieces you might want to look out for when you’re there.

Some of the awesome artwork featured are not only pretty but are also interactive!

Check out the ‘Scream Capture’ located at *SCAPE’s level three. What’s cool about this installation is that you can enter the inverted cone-shaped contraption and scream to your heart’s content. In doing so, the ‘Scream Capture’ will light up and change colours according to your howls of frustration.

‘UP, and away!’ is another interactive feature at the festival. All you have to do is get on one of the four winged-bicycles on level four of *SCAPE and peddle as hard as you possibly can. The harder you peddle, the brighter the wings on the back of the bike will light up. It’s really quite enchanting at night!

Luminance!’s displays will light up from 7pm to 11pm nightly till 1 July. Admission is free for all.

(1) Crossroads 2012: Contemporary Performances of Traditional Arts

Date     : 8 Apr 2012 (Sun), 4pm – 6pm
Venue   :  Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage

The word "crossroads" to most would be understood as "intersection of two or more roads" or even "a point in time where crucial decisions must be made".

"Crossroads: Contemporary Performances of Traditional Arts" is not about making a crucial decision between the two. It is about how two facets of the Arts, the Contemporary (the present) and the Traditional (the past) meet. It is about how performers interpret their traditional arts in today's context. It can also be about experimentation between Traditional Arts forms and Modernity. It could also be an experimentation between various Traditional Art forms of different cultural background to produce something commonly labelled 'Fusion'.

The concert serves as an edutainment platform where the younger generation can gain better understanding of other cultures and be encouraged to pay attention to the traditional arts of their own culture. At the same time, the concert will allow young performers to gain various kinds of experiences when performing overseas.

(2) German Handbell Choir at Jacob Ballas

Date     : 8 Apr 2012 (Sun), 1030am – 12pm
Venue   :  Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage

* Note: Location info not clear. Could be at Jacob Ballas or Botanic Garden. Do call (SBG Helpline number: 1800 4717300) before proceeding to event.

The "Shining Bells" belong to the German Handbellchoir "Handglockenchor Hüttenberg", located in Hessen, near Frankfurt. The 13 ringers are 15 to 27 years old and the younger ringers have an experience of 5 years now. The group originates from a workshop at the secondary school: "Gesamtschule Schwingbach".

The group varied over time and now the ringers are looking forward to their first concert tour abroad in this constellation from March 29 to April 14. Last year they recorded their own CD that was launched in October. This CD and also those of former handbell groups will be sold during their concert tour.

Hurray! There's going to be a new addition to the family!

Grandpa and Grandma are really excited that Richard and May are expecting another child.

But Grandma worries that May is not looking after herself well. Grandpa thinks that the busy couple should spend some time laying a healthy foundation for Joy, their 6 year old daughter who loves the iPhone but dislikes vegetables, and for their new baby.

Richard and May, on the other hand, don’t think it is a problem as many of their friends do likewise for their children.

Find out who knows best in “My Healthy Happy Family”.
